Growing conditions
Three important growing parameters:
Temperature
Control the temperatureMaintain a temperature below 40 °C
In very hot weather, ventilate the greenhouse and/or stop the heating.
If that is not enough, place a shade cloth between the tanks and the greenhouse glass and slightly open the fish tank lid until the temperature drops.
Light
- A photoperiod of 10 to 12 hours per day is essential for photosynthesis.
- To optimize photosynthesis, a shade cloth is required: continuous direct light rays on the aquarium inhibit the process and therefore growth.
- If the spirulina aquarium is indoors, place it in a bright room, with indirect or non-permanent exposure to light.
Aeration
It is necessary to allow air to diffuse throughout the culture medium, to promote CO₂ dissolution and therefore photosynthesis, as well as culture mixing.
Good to know
- The pH must be between 9 and 11.
- Spirulina biomass increases by 20 to 25% per day.
- Prefer harvesting in the morning: the protein content is higher.
