Prepare before you leave on vacation

How to prepare your greenhouse before going on vacation?

🌐 🇫🇷 FR · 🇬🇧 EN · 🇩🇪 DE

The recommendations to follow will therefore be slightly different depending on the season when you leave for your holiday.

I. General recommendations

The general recommendations are the ones to follow during the in-between seasons, spring and autumn, but also in summer and winter, with additional precautions for these last two seasons.

I. 1. Permaculture beds

1. Water from above.

2. Check that the wood mulch is properly in place, it helps prevent water evaporation.

3. Fill the reserves of the permaculture beds. This will allow the plants to have a water reserve for 2 to 3 weeks and about 1 week during a heatwave. The reserve is full when water comes out through the small holes at the bottom on the side of the beds.

I. 2. Bioponics / aquaponics tanks

1. Carry out a complete cleaning of the filter and irrigation system.

2. Fill the tanks to the recommended maximum.

3. Check that the pump and the air pump / aerator are working properly.

4. Check that all vertical growing towers are being irrigated properly.

5. Check that you have recently applied the recommended fertilizer. This will allow the plants to continue growing.

  • For summer plants (tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, …), in the 15 days before your departure.
  • For winter plants, in the month before your departure.

6. If you are using aquaponics, check that there is enough fish food for the duration of your absence.

  • I. 3. Greenhouse in general

Water your seed propagator, your potatoes and your microgreens.

II. Additional precautions

II. 1. In summer

Whatever the duration of your absence, it is strongly recommended that someone comes to check once a week to:

  • check the water level
  • check tower irrigation
  • carry out harvests

In summer, and especially during a heatwave, you may face water shortages and high temperatures while you are away.

1. Check that the vents are fully open.

2. Deploy the shade cloth (if this has not already been done).

3. Leave the greenhouse open to allow it to air out. If you cannot leave the greenhouse completely open, you can place an insect screen between the doors.

Good to know

During periods of high heat, do not start any new sowing, or plant microgreens. Microgreens grow too quickly and you will no longer be able to harvest them when you return.

📘

Depending on your geographical area, especially in the south of France and during a heatwave, it is essential to install summer growing adaptation equipment.

  • The side shade cloth,
  • The programmable misting system,
  • The screen doors,
  • Automatic tank filling with a programmable reverse osmosis unit.

II. 2. In winter

In winter, if you continue growing in your greenhouse, you may experience temperatures dropping too low.

Close the vents and the doors of your greenhouse securely.
