Growing conditions
Three important growing parameters:

Diagram of the spirulina culture medium
1 - Heating system (heating elements)
2 - Lighting system (LED lamps) – For spirulina growth through photosynthesis
3 - Aeration system (air pump) – For mixing the spirulina and diffusing CO₂
Temperature

Temperature control for spirulina cultivation
1 - Low temperature: Slower growth
2 - 32-35 °C: Optimal growth
3 - 40 °C: Culture collapse
Control the temperatureMaintain a temperature below 40 °C
In very hot weather, ventilate the greenhouse and/or stop the heating.
If that is not enough, place a shade cloth between the tanks and the greenhouse glass and slightly open the fish tank lid until the temperature drops.
Light
- A photoperiod of 10 to 12 hours per day is essential for photosynthesis.
- To optimize photosynthesis, a shade cloth is required: continuous direct light rays on the aquarium inhibit the process and therefore growth.
- If the spirulina aquarium is indoors, place it in a bright room, with indirect or non-permanent exposure to light.
Let's save energyOn days with good brightness, it is not necessary to run the lighting.
Aeration
It is necessary to allow air to diffuse throughout the culture medium, to promote CO₂ dissolution and therefore photosynthesis, as well as culture mixing.
Good to know
- The pH must be between 9 and 11.
- Spirulina biomass increases by 20 to 25% per day.
- Prefer harvesting in the morning: the protein content is higher.
